AC Sizing: Why It’s Critical for Comfort and Efficiency
August 14, 2026

It’s getting hot in here… But it doesn’t have to be. As summer temperatures rise, so do the costs of keeping our homes cool and comfortable. We know how expensive traditional air conditioning systems can get, especially older models that are big energy hogs. These days, however, there are a number of energy-efficient cooling solutions that not only keep you comfortable but also save you money and benefit the environment.
Let’s explore some of these energy-efficient air conditioning options and why they might be a great choice for you during these hot Saskatoon summers.
Today’s central air conditioning systems are much more efficient than their predecessors. New models come with high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) ratings, which show how efficiently the system operates over an entire season. A higher SEER rating equals greater energy efficiency. Upgrading to a central air conditioner with a SEER rating of 16 or higher can significantly decrease how much energy you’re using and how much it costs. It may also be worth noting that, as of 2023, the minimum SEER rating your new A/C units can have is 13.
Ductless mini-split systems are a versatile and efficient option, especially if your home doesn’t have ductwork. These systems have an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air handling units. Each indoor unit can be controlled independently, so you can cool exactly where you need to cool and reduce your energy waste. Ductless systems also eliminate any energy losses that come with ductwork for even more efficiency!
Heat pumps can be an excellent energy-conscious alternative to traditional air conditioners. They work by transferring heat from one place to another rather than creating cool air. For example, in the summer, a heat pump extracts the heat from inside your home and releases it outdoors. Modern heat pumps have high efficiency ratings and can provide both cooling and heating, offering year-round comfort.
We hear you. This isn’t exactly a cooling system. However, smart thermostats can have a key role in enhancing the efficiency of your air conditioning system. They learn your schedule and preferences, and adjust accordingly to provide maximum comfort and efficiency. Some smart thermostats can even detect when you’re away from home and adjust settings to save energy.

Probably one of the strongest reasons to upgrade to an energy-efficient cooling system is the potential for significant cost savings. Energy-efficient systems consume less electricity, which directly translates to lower utility bills. We get it. That initial investment in a high-efficiency system might be higher, but we can’t argue that the long-term savings often outweigh the upfront costs. Additionally, many energy-efficient systems qualify for rebates and tax incentives, easing the financial burden and making it easier to switch to an energy-efficient system.

Reducing energy consumption not only saves money but also benefits the environment. Traditional air conditioning systems rely heavily on fossil fuels, which contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Switching to an energy-efficient cooling system uses less electricity, which reduces the demand for fossil fuel-generated power and lowers your carbon footprint. By upgrading to an energy-efficient system, you’re making a positive impact on the environment and helping to combat climate change.
Energy-efficient air conditioning systems are designed to provide more consistent and effective cooling. Today’s technology has given us advanced features like variable-speed compressors and enhanced humidity control, ensuring that your home stays comfortable even during the hottest days. Additionally, systems like ductless mini-splits and smart thermostats put you in control over your indoor environment by allowing you to customize the temperature in your home however you want.
These systems are part of your home’s skeleton, and investing in energy-efficient upgrades can increase its value. Potential buyers are often willing to pay a premium for homes with updated, energy-efficient systems. These upgrades make your home more attractive if you’re looking to sell because they also demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and reduced living costs.
Energy-efficient cooling systems are built with advanced technology and high-quality components, making them more reliable and durable than older models. These systems often require less maintenance (learn more about maintenance here) and experience fewer breakdowns, providing peace of mind and reducing the hassle and expense of frequent repairs. (Of course, if you ever need repairs, we’re here to help!)
